Context
The compost dilemma
Despite increasing interest in reducing waste, only 23% of households compost, often discouraged by the smell, mess, and bulky, unattractive bins. Many want their gardens to look beautiful, but composting doesn’t fit that vision—it feels more like an obligation. Elho approached FLEX/design to team up to make composting both practical and visually appealing so more people embrace it without sacrificing their garden aesthetics.

To promote conscious behavior, we’re turning composting into something families can proudly display. With a beautifully designed composter, it shifts from a hidden task to a visible statement in the garden, making sustainability both effortless and rewarding.
Concept
Elho’s joyful composter
We helped Elho expand their "Green Basics" line by designing a composter that complements their rain barrels and plant pots. Instead of sticking to the usual bulky composter design, we began with a soft, friendly look and then integrated the necessary functional features. The result is an efficient, visually appealing composter that fits perfectly in gardens and promotes sustainable living.

Smart design, smart production
The Elho composter is crafted using blow-molding technology from 100% recycled plastic, with the bottom shell, composter body, and top lid produced in a single step. Working closely with Elho and Wien, we made sure the product is both sustainable and functional. The challenge of blow-molding is achieving thin, precise parts, but we made it work. Our design remains sturdy thanks to the extra ribs from the Green Basics line, stacking functionality, and the seamless integration of the hatch interface into the main shape.
