Design for a better future

Design for a better future

We must make sure that our planet stays a safe, equitable and healthy place to live. We owe that to future generations.

The impact of design

The time where designers were only interested in the esthetical aspects of products is (fortunately) far behind us. Nowadays design and design thinking has a more profound impact on the world around us.

By connecting knowledge and insights on human behavior, technology, brands and business, and by making these connections tangible in products and services, designers make relevant contributions to our society.

On this page we would like to share with you inspiring examples that aim to or already have proven to have a positive impact on our world.

Reducing impact and going circular

We must not see sustainability as something that only adds costs to the bottom line; we believe it’s an opportunity to create a sustainable business.

There are numerous ways to make packaging more sustainable. But the number one challenge is to close the circle and design the supply chain of packaging so that waste becomes a resource.

With Seepje, a brand of biological detergents, we identified a material source of 100% post-consumer waste and designed the laundry detergent bottle based on these specific material specs.

Creating employment opportunities

Almost 25 years ago we designed a very simple object that has been sold throughout the world in millions since then. The CableTurtle has become a true design icon and is part of the permanent collection of the MoMa in New York.

Very few people however know that it was designed to be assembled by mentally and physically challenged people, who have very few employment opportunities. The CableTurtle is a tool to give them a new outlook on life.

Make People eat more healthy

We all know that eating two pieces of fruit a day is healthy. Fresh fruit is truly appreciated but cumbersome to store, take with you and prepare.

The concept and design of Fruit2day, a chewy fruit drink for Hero, enables millions of people in Europe and the US to eat the equivalent of two pieces of fruit on a daily basis. Thanks to the packaging design the proposition became very popular.

Improve the quality of life in emergency situations

The eSOS we developed reinvents (emergency) toilets and treatment facilities, and uses ICT to bring cost savings to the entire sanitation management chain. The toilet will improve the quality of life of people in need during emergency situations – from natural to anthropological disasters – and minimizes the threat to public health of the most vulnerable members of society

Saving water and minimizing chemical waste

Our re-invention of the paint bucket saves over 8 million liters of water every year and prevents 160.000 kg of paint leftovers from being flushed into the sewer, in the Netherlands alone! The 1-2 Paint is a powerful sustainable solution that helped AKZO Nobel to increase their European market share significantly.

Enabling elderly to live at home longer

The lift design is modern, elegant and modest. Instead of being a stigmatizing product, the Otolift ONE is an addition to the interior and above all a huge improvement in the quality of life for people with limited mobility.
